Ingenious Migration Services

Tired of what you have?  Let us help you move.

Network

Businesses everywhere are taking advantage of the reliability, security and low cost of network infrastructures based on Linux and other Free and Open Source Software.

We can plan and implement a migration of your network servers to a Linux based solution.  This includes:

  • File Servers
  • Print Servers
  • Firewall
  • Web Servers (Internet and Intranet)
  • Database Servers

Desktop

Linux

Linux on the Desktop has really come of age in recent times.  There is a large range of high-quality alternatives to the major proprietary applications.

We can support you in breaking away from the confines of the proprietary desktop to a solution based on Linux.  We have experience in implementing and using many of the available Linux desktop offerings. If you are looking for a recommendation it would be Ubuntu.

Mac OS

As an alternative to Linux we also have many years experience dealing with Mac OS X (and previous Macintosh OS versions). Mac OS X shares a number of advanatges with Linux.  In particular:
  • It has a Unix heritage
  • It is secure and doesn't suffer from Viruses and other Malware
  • There is a large range of Free/Open Source software available
  • It scales from the small to large. (Although not as far in either direction as Linux)

Windows

Finally we also offer support for Windows. While we firmly believe that Linux and Mac OS X offer major advantages over Windows we recognise that for some clients it will be necessary to use Windows. Ingenious' staff have many years experience with Windows both as a client and as a server operating system.

We can offer help with configuring and securing your Windows system particularly:
  • Anti-virus software
  • Software installation
  • Custom development
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Free and Open Source software for Windows (for example FireFox, Thunderbird, Open Office, MySQL and many others)

Database

There are a number of open source databases systems available.  Two that we support and recommend are PostgreSQL and MySQL (see our databases page for more information).

We can plan and conduct a migration to either of these databases (as well as to Oracle if required).  We can do so from almost any structured data - database, spreadsheets, text files - whatever.  Feel free to contact us for an obligation free initial consultation.

Our Methods

Our migration methods follow those described by IBM's Linux Client Migration Cookbook. In summary this is:

  • Assessment and decision whether migration is feasible for you
  • Planning - non-technical (organisational and human factors)
  • Planning - technical (choosing the right technologies)
  • Pilot implementation (where appropriate)
  • Rollout
  • Post migration assessment
